The EV4 and EV4-Bike are an innovative electric quad-scooter and tricycle combo, developed by Polish designer, Jack Skopinski. The EV4 is built around an electric engine and is designed to tilt with every carve and turn. We caught up with Skopinski to find out more:
1. Tell us about EV4. What inspired you to create the four-wheel drive electric scooter, and then the 3-wheel version?
I grew up in the Polish capital of Warsaw. Warsaw is extremely busy, and every year the city becomes more and more jam packed with traffic and buildings. I wanted to develop an alternative means of transport, which could easily get around street jams. I began to think about the development of an innovative vehicle that would allow for faster urban transport. I made a list of my expectations and I came to the following conclusions. The vehicle had to be: faster than a bicycle, maintenance-free, self-propelled and suitable for use in an elevator, an office, a home, the subway, etc.
While searching for a solution, which would combine all these qualities, I came to the conclusion that the mass of the vehicle should no more than 50 kg, be a similar size to a bicycle, and include an electric engine.
One key problem remained, however—how would one increase the vehicle’s stability compared to that of a bicycle? How could we increase the stability of a 4-wheel drive vehicle, while eliminating any tendency for chain derailment in curves, and keep it small enough for use in a bike lane?
I started looking for a technical solution that would combine the advantages of a single track and double track vehicle. Following my background in aeronautics, where control units are utilized in small aircraft, I decided to design an innovative suspension system, which is now implemented in the EV4. Thus the EV4 is a 4 wheel drive vehicle, which can tilt in the same way as a traditional bicycle.
Pretty cool.
2. How long did it take to design and develop? What challenges did you face?
From idea to first build, it took about one year. We then tested the first prototype and made corrections for the next version. After around seven revisions, we then created what it is today, the EV4. In total, it took around two years.
3. What is the bike made from?
Our company builds and repairs ultralight aeroplanes. The EV4 is made from the same materials we use for these aircraft.
4. What environments can you use EV4 in?
It’s designed primarily for use in the city and other urban environments, but it can also be used off-road.
5. How have people responded?
Consumer response has been really positive. They have been really impressed with the modern design and the stability of the bike. One person told me that it looked like ‘LEGO TECHNIK.’
6. How much does it cost? Where can you buy it from?
The current price is 3500 Euro, and you get yourself one at our website.
7. What’s your plan for the rest of 2016?
The EV4 BIKE is our new product which we are focussing on this year. But, I also have a couple ideas for a new amazing electric vehicle which I hope to make by the end of this year. Stay tuned!
