For independent filmmakers, be it action sports, outdoor, adventure or story, budgets can be non-existent and any budget that exists is first and foremost gobbled up by equipment and transport costs. After the main aspects of a film projects or worked out and most of the footage and/scenes have been captured, it’s time to cut the film together. It’s at this point that you realise you need some awesome music to enhance the mood of the piece. Well unless you have the software, time or a buddy to compose some music for the film this means acquiring the license for existing compositions, often requiring more money. But you don’t have any money left?
Thanks to the electronic musician Moby this is no longer a problem. Five years ago Moby started the website mobygratis.com, giving free music to students, non-profits and indie film makers. Watch the video below to hear Moby describe his free music service.

mobygratis.com offers over 150 tracks, including music from his latest records, that can be used in non-commercial projects for free. If the music is used in a commercial project, any money that’s generated goes to the humane society, which is a great cause concerning animal welfare issues. Great stuff Moby!
According to Moby and his website, mobygratis.com will turn around music requests in a 24-hour period. As long as your project is non-commercial, mobygratis.com basically says “yes” when asked for permission for songs listed in its catalog.
If you have specific questions for mobygratis.com, you can head over to the website’s support forum to ask your question or see if someone else has made the same inquiry.
