Adventure for different people can mean different things. For some, it is about participating in a new activity, while for others, it is only about performing death-defying stunts. The one aspect everyone agrees upon is that adventure leads to an unimaginable adrenaline rush. It is an emotional high that many of us crave as an escape from our mundane daily lives.
For most people, adventure is limited to taking part in a local marathon or going hiking in a National Park. However, for some individuals, it is about exceeding the limits of our physical and mental abilities. Moreover, adventure is also in the unknown, in discovering things around us that we might not know about. These are instances that open up a whole new world that coexists alongside us often hidden from our prying eyes. Featuring amazing acts from real people and the animal kingdom, here are a few must-watch documentaries that will undoubtedly ignite an adventurous spark in you.
Sherpa
A hauntingly thought-provoking documentary, Sherpa takes the viewer into the complicated lives of the Sherpa community. The docu-film is a brilliant insight into the dangerous life of the people who assist mountain climbers on one of the most difficult of adventures, that of conquering Mount Everest. The film primarily features an avalanche incident in 2014 that left 16 Sherpas dead and led to the re-evaluation of the risks that Sherpas take every day of their lives.
The Barkley Marathons
A little-known race like nothing you have ever seen, the Barkley Marathons take place in a small Tennessee town where only 35 runners are allowed to participate. However, in the last 25 years of the race, only 10 runners have managed to complete the marathon. A competition with no markers, the runners are given a map and a compass using which they have to complete five loops and then find their way to the finish line. A thrilling ride that tests the mental and physical strengths of the racers, The Barkley Marathons is both an absurd and infectiously adventurous watch at the same time.
Night on Earth
The animal kingdom is full of wonders, but most humans only get to see what animals are up to during the daytime. Night on Earth takes a novel approach and films animals in action at night, using supersensitive cameras placed at prominent points in places like the African savannas. Maybe not as murderously exciting as the ongoing drama of Tiger King, the infamous Netflix documentary, Night on Earth is still a riveting look at some of the other species that also call our planet their home.
The Dawn Wall
A must watch for climbing enthusiasts, The Dawn Wall is a brilliant documentary that features Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson as they go about free-climbing El Capitan. One of Yosemite’s iconic rock formations, The Dawn Wall is so-called because it is the first spot on the mountain that receives sunlight in the morning. What truly stands out in the documentary is the passion and obsession that Caldwell showcases towards achieving his goal, a real inspiration for any future climbers.
