Crocodiles aren’t usually animals you should mess with. So when a group of fishermen decided to sneak up on one in Western Australia, they got a huge shock when the croc pulled a trick of his own.
The croc encounter
Matt Cox runs fishing tour company Northbound Charters in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. He regularly takes budding fishermen out on the local rivers to catch big fish like Giant Grouper and Saltwater Barramundi.
While on a recent trip along the Ord River, on the lookout for barramundi fish, they spotted a giant croc on the side of the bank and went in for a closer look.
After the crocodile makes a giant U-turn, you can hear the fishermen yelp as they quickly turn the boat away from the bank. They start to laugh once they realise they are out of danger. Their instinctive reaction has since caught the interest of the internet, making the video a viral sensation.
Croc vs flip flop
A couple months earlier, another woman encountered a giant crocodile in Australia’s Northern Territory, but her reaction was completing different. Unfazed by its size, the woman confronts the croc with the help of her flip flop.
This woman and her small dog were seen at the edge of the water at Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River, in Kakadu National Park, when a saltwater crocodile swam towards them. She removed her flip flop and slapped it against her hand which caused the crocodile to retreat, much to her apparent amusement.
While brave, many have pointed out how dangerous the situation was. Given a crocodile’s unpredictable behaviour, strength and speed, the outcome of this encounter could have been very different.
I think we’ll stick to watching these magnificent beasts from afar…very afar.
