When you’re out biking you don’t necessarily consider bumping into any animals on the track. You’d think the noise and motion would scare them away. But in Australia, sharing the dirt track with a troop of kangaroos is standard practice, something Jake Meadley from Esperance, Western Australia has come to accept.
The mountain biker was out riding the tracks recently at the local mountain bike park in Esperance when he ran into (not literally) a bunch of wild kangaroos. He filmed the footage on his GoPro.
Apparently, Meadley often encounters kangaroos when out cycling. He told Caters News:
We have some resident kangaroos at the track so [I] am guaranteed to see at least one kangaroo every ride,
and while most kangaroos retreat for the bushes:
on a particular day a mate and I had only been on the track two minutes when we came across this little guy. We had a mini race—best encounter I’ve ever had with a roo!
Kangaroo encounters are relatively common for cyclists in the Australian bush. While most do dodge and dive to avoid the bikes, some, as Meadley proves, bound and leap centimetres from the cyclist. On some occasions, they’ve even leapt at the biker instead.
This video was filmed by Peter James Roberts when out cycling in Humbug Scrub, South Australia.
Luckily, the kangaroo and cyclist were unharmed. Turned out this leap of faith was just a little ill-timed.
