‘The Experience’ kart circuit in Glasgow have been open for business since November 2014, running BIZ adult and cadet electric karts. As part of The Experience’s ‘Karting with a Conscience’ BIZ Karts were tasked with designing and manufacturing a one-of-a-kind two-seater kart offering individuals with a variety of disabilities the opportunity to access the adrenaline filled world of electric go-karting. The Electric Dual Drive was designed to make getting passengers in and out of the karts as easy as possible, and give them their first experience of karting in a strong and reliable kart. In addition to the Electric Dual Drive, ‘The Experience’ also runs four tandem two-seaters within the programme as the next level up. Check out the short video below to see the fantastic opportunities these new karts offer.
‘The Experience’ already had a number of double-seat karts in their roster. However these featured their extra/passenger seat in the back, in a narrower chassis design. This was fine for more able-bodied individuals but didn’t allow those with some physical disabilities access to the track. Aside from easier accessibility into the kart, the new side-by-side 2 seaters have other advantages; by fitting them with an extra wheel and pedal set, coaches can take student racers onto the track and teach them the ropes. This gives new drivers confidence and a platform to progress from, but also allows coaches the opportunity to monitor student drivers more closely for faster progression.
We caught up with BIZ Kart engineer Chris Day to find out a bit more about the new karts.
“The main challenge for the side by side 2 seater was making sure access to the kart was going to be easy for the less able-bodied person. We also had to ensure the kart would handle a narrow and twisty track which is no easy task with the added weight and wider front track,” Day explained.
“The two seater had a complete restructure of the Powertrain. We packaged the control systems and lithium battery into a single unit.
“Everything was designed and manufactured in house. For both the 2 seater and tandem karts, we made some tweaks to the programming so the customers can experience the thrill of full torque from the motors, but we added remote speed control for safety!”
