With the Wave Garden Bristol, being built pretty close by to ADAPT in South West England, there is a huge buzz surrounding inland surfing within the local surf community. For landlocked countries, it would appear that the only surf spots available would be these man-made waves.
Now think of the least likely places in the world that you could surf…mountains crossed your mind right? Sure the mountains provide and abundance of mountain bike trails in the summer and ski slopes in the winter but surfing? Well it turns out that you can surf in the Swiss Alps when there is enough rain, and that’s what’s happened recently.
That heavy rainfall has caused the river Thur to flood and form powerful standing river waves, AWESOME! Two Swiss surfers took advantage of the situation and the dudes from Schizo-Vreni Food and Travel filmed all the action for us to enjoy. SURFER Mag has called it flood surfing, and wrote: “As if you are in a video game, dodging large pieces of debris seems to be part of the experience.”
Switzerland also has the Swiss Surfing Association, which promotes the sport of surfing, holds Swiss Surfing Championships and represents Switzerland at international events.
“Aloha from the Alps!” the SSA writes as an introduction on its Facebook page. COOL!
