Reducing waste and protecting the planet is extremely important to me and that’s why I created this guide to 12 must-haves for zero-waste backpacking. Due to this, I’m always on the lookout for new pieces of eco-friendly innovative gear to take backpacking and camping. Anything that’ll help me reduce waste, that’s easy to use, portable and ultra-lightweight.
Stainless steel bottles are reusable, but they can be bulky and heavy. So that’s why I’ve been looking into collapsible bottles, and this new one called HDYAWAY looks and sounds ideal.
HYDAWAY: The eco collapsible water bottle
Leakproof and ultra-portable
Unlike some other collapsible bottles, the HYDAWAY is 100% leakproof thanks to its watertight seals. It’s ultraportable, collapsing down to just 4cm, and can be expanded to carry up to 850ml of water. It also has a flip-up carry handle if you want to attach it to the outside of your bag. It’s made from food-grade silicone and also non-toxic BPA plastic.
While in an ideal world, nothing would be produced using plastic—that’s just not possible. It forms the building blocks of many materials including construction and appliances and because of its unique properties, we’ve yet to find an eco-friendly alternative to match it. For example, this type of bottle could never be produced from metal, as metal can’t fold in the same way.
But what we can do is stop single-use plastic and use alternatives where possible. According to the brand, since 2015 the HYDAWAY has prevented over 1,100 metric tonnes of plastic waste from reaching our oceans, streets and landfill.
So while a metal bottle may be better for every day, the HYDAWAY looks perfect for camping and backpacking.
If you’re interested take a look at their Kickstarter page. The brand has already exceeded their goal by £75,000 (at time of publishing) with 11 days still to go.
